Heuristic Evaluation
What
One or more evaluators systematically inspect a user interface
design and judge its compliance with recognized usability
principles.
When
At any point in the design process, using paper prototypes
or online mockups (more interaction problems are found with
an online review).
Who
More evaluators will find more errors. Best results with 3-5
evaluators - but even 1 is better than none!
How
1. Evaluators review interface individually and report problems
to coordinator. Alternatively, evaluators can review interface
as a group, while coordinator records problems. Evaluators
do not have to agree on a problem - all should be recorded.
* Cool trick for evaluation: Choose a random page in the site.
Can you tell where you are? Can you tell what you can/should
do next? 2. Coordinator combines problems and removes duplicates.
3. Evaluators review combined list individually and assign
severity ratings.
4. Coordinator averages ratings and ranks problems by severity.
5. Designer looks for patterns and find solutions
For example, if lots of the problems are consistency-related,
work out a consistency guideline, then fix the problems according
to the guideline.
